OTHER DOCUMENTS/CERTIFICATES

This Consulate provides Chilean citizens with official documents such as passports, legal public documents, certificates, etc. These and other services are provided with a charge that must be paid in US dollars, by cash or certified check. Personal checks are not accepted.

REGISTRATIONS

Birth

To register a birth in our Consulates, the spouses must appear at the Consulate. The following are requirements for registering a birth:

  • One or both of the parents must be Chilean.
  • The minor must have been born in the corresponding consular jurisdiction.
  • An original birth certificate, issued by the local authorities and translated into Spanish, must be provided.
  • Parents who married in Chile must present an original marriage certificate.
  • If parents are not married, both must appear in person at the Consulate to register the child.
  • Fees are $5.00 for the registration and US$12.00 for the legalization of the birth certificate. Must be translated into spanish.

Marriage

To register a marriage at the Consulate, the following requirements must be observed:

  • One of the spouses must be a Chilean citizen.
  • An original marriage certificate, issued by the appropriate local authorities and translated into Spanish, must be provided.
  • The certificate must be signed and sealed by the local official authorities.
  • At the time of registration, the marriage must be classified as common share or total separation of assets.
  • Both spouses must appear at the Consulate with their identifications.
  • Fees are $5.00 for the registration and US$12.00 for the legalization of the marriage certificate. Must be translated into spanish.


Death

To register a death, it is necessary to observe the following requirements:

  • The deceased must have been a Chilean citizen or naturalized Chilean, or a foreigner married to a Chilean citizen, whose marriage had been previously registered in a Chilean Consulate.
  • A death certificate issued by local authorities must be provided.
  • An identification document of the deceased must be presented.
  • If the deceased was married, the marriage certificate must be presented, along with a valid identification document from Chile or the United States.
  • The person registering the death must present a valid identification document.
  • If the deceased is a minor, both names of the parents are required.
  • Fees are $5.00 for the registration and US$12.00 for the legalization of the death certificate. Must be translated into spanish.


Military Services

According to Chilean law it is compulsory for all male Chilean citizens to register for military service the year in which they reach the age of 18. Individuals must produce the following:

  • Chilean identification document;
  • Certificate of Residence;
  • languages, areas of study and level of education;
  • Fees. Registration is US$5.00, Amnesty is US$4.00, Postponment is US$7.00

DOCUMENTS

Travel Document

  • Travel documents are granted to the children, born abroad of Chilean parents, who have not been able to obtain their Chilean citizenship (jus sanguinis).
  • This document is granted for two years and can be extended for similar periods.
  • Fee is US$ 30.00

Legalizations

To legalize a document issued by a local authority, you must go through the following individuals and processes:

  • Notary Public
  • County Clerk or Secretary of State
  • Legalization by the Chilean Consulate
  • The consular office will legalize the signature of any authority duely registered with the Consulate.
  • In case of certificates signed by school principals or any other type of document, such as local power of attorneys, the signature must be certified by the Office of the Secretary of State.
    If the document is not in Spanish it must be translated by an authorized translator. Otherwise, once in Chile, it will need to be translated at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile (Teatinos 180, Santiago). The Consul or Chancellor's signature must be legalized by the General Consular Office of the same Ministry, located at Agustinas 1320, Santiago.
  • Legalization can be done by mail. The fee is USD$12. You must deposit this amount at any branch of the Bank of America, account # 00665-09240. Please send to the Chilean Consulate the document you're legalizing together with copy deposit slip from the Bank in a self-addressed stamped enveloped.

VISAS

Tourist Visa: Simple or Multiple

Requirements:

  • valid passport;
  • proof of country of residence;
  • profession and employment certificate;
  • names, addresses and phone numbers of people to be contacted in Chile;
  • letter of invitation may be required;
  • marriage status (if the tourist is married to a Chilean citizen it is necessary to present the corresponding marriage certificate); and
  • application, completed in person.
  • An extension of the tourist visa can be requested for another 90 days. The applicant should request this extension at the Ministry of Foreign Affair in Chile.
  • Payment of the required fee must be made.
  • Please note that US citizens traveling to Chile as tourists require only a valid passport, but not a visa, and a fee of $131.00 upon entering Chile.

Temporary Resident Visa

This type of visa is for people who have relatives in Chile, for foreign investors, researchers, scientists, official members of a church, people beginning work as technical advisers for Chilean institutions or foreign enterprises.
Requirements:

  • family links:
    - Chilean spouse,
    - Chilean parents or children,
    - spouses or children of foreigners residing in Chile,
    - relatives of Chilean citizens, or
    - parents of foreign residents in Chile, older than 18 years old;
  • valid passport;
  • health certificates indicating that the petitioner does not suffer of any infect/contagious decease;
  • criminal background issued by the FBI;
  • application letter explaining the time and the motives for staying in Chile (The applicants must provide a clear, itemized description of their economic situation -- please, include the corresponding labor certificates and financial statements -- and address in Chile. If the applicant is married, the spouse also must sign the application. It is also advisable to include the applicant's telephone number and the date of travel.); and
  • 3 passport pictures.
  • An appointment is necessary.

    Important:

The process takes approximately 4 weeks. Once the visa is granted, the applicant has 90 days to enter the country.
Documentation presented at the Consulates must not be more than 3 months old.
The applicant must appear in person to pick up the visa.


Student Visa
Requirements:

  • certificate of admission from a university or any educational institution recognized by the Chilean State;
  • evidence of scholarship or student loan (otherwise, the student must prove that s/he has sufficient resources to survive in the country -- income certificate, parents economic support, etc.);
  • valid passport;
  • health certificates indicating that the petitioner does not suffer of any infect/contagious decease;
  • criminal background issued by the State (if over 18 years of age); and
  • 3 passport photos.
  • This visa is granted for the duration of the studies, to a maximum of one year.
  • The visa is renewable in Chile.
  • Students are not allowed to work under this visa.
  • Once the visa is granted, the student has 90 days to enter Chile.
  • The petitioner must appear in person to pick up the visa.
  • Fee for US citizens is US$131.00.
  • An appointment is necessary.

Work Visa

  • To apply for a working visa in Chile, the applicant must follow the same steps, described above, for temporary residents.
  • In addition, the applicant must present a job contract from their employer.
  • The job contract must be signed by the employer and legalized by a public notary in Chile. This document must also be legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • The maximum duration for this type of visa is two years. After this period, if the applicant wishes to stay in the country, s/he should apply for permanent residence status.
  • Revalidation can only be granted for 4 consecutive years.
  • Once the visa is granted, the individual has 90 days to enter Chile.
  • The petitioner must appear in person to pick up the visa.
  • An appointment is necessary.

PUBLIC DOCUMENTS AND POWER OF ATTORNEY

The Chilean Consulates can extend a variety of public documents and powers of attorney. The most frequent are the following:

Simple Power of Attorney for the following matters:

  • to withdraw or deposit money
  • to inquire about bank account balances, on behalf of other people or organizations
  • to carry out any type of banking matter
  • for pension or retirement matters
  • Fee US$ 5.00

Traveling authorization for Chileans, or foreigners who reside permanently in Chile, and who are under the age of 18. The requirements are the following:

  • the mother or father authorizing the minor to travel must identify him/herself with a valid ID;
  • proof of maternity or paternity;
  • date of birth of the minor;
  • if the minor is traveling alone, s/he will need authorization from both parents; and
  • payment of the required fee.
  • The minor does not need to appear at the Consulate.
  • Fee US$ 7.00

General Power of Attorney

  • This is a document by which an individual authorizes another person (usually a person who resides in Chile), to represent him/her in all legal and commercial matters, for example, to purchase or sell property. This power can be presented in any civil, judicial or administrative authority, institution or corporation by the authorized person in any pending or future matter.
  • Fee US$ 50.00 plus US$ 5.00 per page.

Special Power of Attorney

  • This is a document by which an individual authorizes another person to represent him/her in one or more specific matters. The authorized person can act on behalf of the other person as if s/he were the same.
  • Fee US$ 25.00 plus US$ 5.00 per page

Letter of Authorization

  • This a document by which an individual names another person to act in a specific matter on his/her behalf, for example, to withdraw or deposit funds in a bank account, to withdraw a pension, etc. Because this is not a public document, it cannot authorize an individual to purchase or sell property on the behalf of another.
  • Fee US$ 5.00

Sworn Declarations

  • In this document the Consul notarizes the signature of an individual making a sworn statement on a specific matter.
  • Fee US$ 5.00

ANIMAL AND PLANT CONTROL

People wishing to travel to Chile with animals or plants need to obtain the following documents:

  • valid certificate issued by competent local authorities, indicating that the animal or plant is in good health
  • These certificates are obtained from a veterinarian or the competent local authority.
  • The above requirements are only applicable to plants. Animals, animal products or subproducts are exempted according to By Law #2 passed on O1/08/93, by the Ministry of Agriculture.
  • Fee US$ 5.00
